One of the best ways to be prepared for a breast augmentation is by being knowledgeable and informed. Who better to ask than your surgeon? Here are some questions to have answered about this procedure:
What will augmentation do? What won't it do? This method entails surgically inserting an implant filled with either saline or silicone solution under the chest muscle or breast tissue. It will add fullness to the area, but it won't lift saggy skin. Your surgeon will let you know if this procedure will give you the results that you're looking for.
What are the risks of complications? All medical procedures have some element of risk. Ask your doctor if there are any risks specific to your health and medical condition. Typical risks include adverse reaction to anesthetic, unsightly scarring, loss of nipple sensitivity, rupture of the implant and encapsulation of the area, resulting in hardening of the tissue.
Should other procedures be performed concurrently? Often a boob lift, or mastopexy, will help to lift excessive sagging of breasts. In the case of a "Mommy Makeover", a tummy tuck or liposuction may be performed at the same time, as well.
How long is the recovery period? This procedure usually takes one to three hours and the patient will be home by the same day. Within six weeks, the swelling and bruising will be gone and the area healed.
How much pain will the operation entail? There will be mild discomfort which will be easily managed with pain medication.
How much does boob augmentation cost? This varies depending on the plastic surgeon's individual fees, the part of the country where the doctor is located and the extent of alterations that are deemed necessary.
Will a physical examination be necessary before surgery? This varies by doctor and individual case.
Where will the scars be placed? This is an individual choice made by both patient and surgeon. The choices are under the nipple/areola area, under the breast crease, via the navel or armpit area.
Is there an age limit that will affect you? If you are over the age of twenty-two, you will not be affected by age restrictions. The FDA stipulates that a woman must be over eighteen to receive saline implants and over the age of twenty-two years of age to receive the silicone implants. If this is a breast reconstruction, there is no age restriction.
After your questions are answered about breast augmentation, you will be prepared to make an informed decision.
