
How does a vegetarian go low carb? If all the low carb diets are protein fueled, how does the vegetarian lose weight on a low carb diet?
It's true that the avid vegetarian diet is quite different and unique based on the foods eaten but there are ways to eat a low carb diet without having to eat meat or poultry as your source of protein. Vegetarians primarily eat carbohydrates as their source for protein along with vegetables and fruit. The difference for these carbs is the source and the quality by which they are made and how your body utilizes them.
The differences in the chemical make-up of carbohydrates are so vast and unique that your body knows the difference between the two types and automatically processes them differently. Vegetarians will mostly eat high complex carbohydrates like brown rice, yams, fresh vegetables, whole grains and legumes. These foods may be high in carbohydrates but your body sees the nutritional value first and takes its time absorbing the nutrients into your cells before completing the digestion process. Very little, if any, is stored as fat as these wonderful carbs are not converted into glucose as other processed simple carbohydrates are.
It's the chips, breads, white rice and pasta that will be taken is and converted to sugar that will cause your fat cells to expand. Your body doesn't know the difference between a baked potato and a spoonful of sugar when eaten. It processes them in the same way. The human system can't hold onto these substances once they enter the body so these foods don't stay long in your stomach. Your body tells itself that this is sugar and needs to get into your cells pronto. Your cells have no clue what to do with this stuff so it tells your fat cells to store it. Think about it, it's like your body is a hoarder of sugar and doesn't want to let go of it. It's programmed to save it for a rainy day, in case you need it.
So yes, vegetarians can go low carb as long as the low carb is the simple carbs that we all need to forego eating. Those sources of carbs does not do any body any good.
